I-140 Petition

<p>The <b>Form I-140</b> is filed by an employer to petition for a foreign worker to become a permanent resident in a certain EB category.</p><p>For H-1Bs going to green cards, typically the sequence is:</p><ul><li>PERM labor cert (if required)</li><li>I-140 petition</li></ul><p>Approval of the I-140 is a key milestone – it can give H-1B extensions beyond 6 years and locks in the worker's priority date. Some categories like EB-1 don't require PERM and go straight to I-140. Once an I-140 is approved and a visa number is available, the employee can file I-485 for the green card.</p>
