I-94
Arrival/Departure Record issued to international visitors indicating status and authorized stay period in the U.S.
About I-94

The I-94 is a small record (now electronic for air arrivals) that is created when someone enters the U.S. or when USCIS approves a change/extension of status.

For H-1B workers, the I-94 (either attached to approval notice or obtained at the airport) will list 'H1B' and an expiration date. That date is the last day the person is allowed to stay in H-1B status for that petition (usually matches the petition validity).

The I-94 is extremely important; if it expires and not extended, the person is out of status. When changing employers inside the U.S., USCIS issues a new I-94 upon approval. When traveling, a new I-94 is issued at re-entry.
