About OPT (Optional Practical Training)

F-1 international students in the U.S. can apply for OPT, which gives them up to 12 months of work authorization post-completion of studies (with a STEM degree, they can extend further 24 months).

OPT is often when students get H-1B sponsorship – employers hire them on OPT and then file an H-1B petition. The cap-gap provision exists to cover the end of OPT until H-1B starts if they win the lottery.

OPT is not a dual intent status, but switching to H-1B is common and straightforward if selected.
