About Recapture

H-1B workers who travel abroad can 'recapture' those days to add to their total allowed stay.

For example, if over the course of an H-1B period the person spent 2 months outside the U.S. (on vacation or business trips), when filing an extension, the employer can request to recapture that time – effectively not counting it toward the 6-year limit.

Documentation like entry/exit dates is provided. Recapture is also used when someone was in the U.S. in H-1B for less than 6 years, left, and then wants to come back without doing the lottery again – they can reclaim the remainder of the unused 6-year period.
